Be able to effectively communicate with your patent attorney. The Idea Next Step website is totally “Free” and filled with information regarding types of patents, patent terms, patent searches, and much more. Learn to determine if your idea merits investment before spending large sums of money. Is it patentable? What type of patent should you apply for? Has your idea been patented already? Learn to perform a preliminary patent search for “Free” on our Idea Next Step website. Learn to identify companies who’s sole objective is to extract cash from you for knowledge which is available for free. “No” matter how comfortable you become, please, please don’t attempt to be your own patent attorney. If your idea is truly marketable, then it’s too valuable not to be handled by a professional licensed patent attorney. Please make every attempt to log and record your idea and idea maturation. Inexpensive log books can be purchased at any local discount store. Be particular and careful to attain a style or type where the pages are as secure as possible. Insecure binding where the pages can be manipulated is unacceptable. The pages should be white, with blue or black lines preferably. Remember to date each entry and have a witness sign the log. Also, you’ll need to have a separate log book for each different invention. Agreements and documents are very expensive.
